- Strong C++ fundamentals: memory management, pointers, structs, and comfort reasoning about low-level system behavior
- Experience with systems-level programming — anything involving file I/O, networking, or OS-level APIs is relevant, even outside storage specifically
- Some Go experience is a plus (our services are Go with CGO bindings into the C layer), but strong C++ instincts matter more than prior Go exposure
- Comfort with concurrency: locks, race conditions, deadlock avoidance
- Careful, methodical debugging habits — this system prioritizes correctness over speed of shipping, and bugs here can mean data loss
- Ability to read and extend existing native code rather than always designing greenfield systems
